 Hello All,

The Gibsons family network thanks you for your support this last Friday and are also going to open (the Lounge) today Sunday. Please remember it is cash transactions – no debit card.

If we continue to support I am sure they will open on Fridays and Sundays.

The Lounge area is warm and a great place to view the games/practices. The TVs and stereo still work and its a great social area for families. I know this is short notice Managers but could you try and get it out there

Thanks Tom

Hello All,

The SCRD and the Gibsons Family Network have come to an agreement to run a small coffee shop at the Sechelt Lounge area on Friday nights between 5:00pm – 8:30pm.

This new initiative offers to the public a warm area to view the hockey game or practice as well as an opportunity to purchase and enjoy a snack or a drink. The TV’s are still hooked up in case there is hockey game televised or maybe cartoons for the siblings of our star Minor Hockey players.

Please support this initiative and maybe they will open on Sundays or possibly other week nights

Regards

Tom Poulton

Hi Everyone,

The SCMH needs your input on what direction you would like to see the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA), our parent association, go in terms of bodychecking versus bodycontact only. The attached documents provide great detail into the matter, so please use them to educate yourself. If you are already familiar with the issue, a simplified version of the poll questions have also been provided below, which is also where to enter your votes.

Your opinion is important to us, so please get back to your division manager as soon as possible with your votes. All votes need to be submitted to division managers before January 18th.

Resolution #1 - PCAHA to eliminate bodychecking from ALL "C" hockey

To eliminate bodychecking from all house ("C") hockey, whereas right now bodychecking is allowed in the Peewee division and above, but not in Atom and below.

Vote : YES  or  NO

Resolution #2 - PCAHA to eliminate bodychecking from Peewee "C" hockey

Note: Resolution #2 will only be considered if resolution #1 is defeated. If resolution #1 passes, then resolution #2 will be withdrawn.

To eliminate bodychecking from the Peewee "C" division, whereas right now bodychecking is allowed in the Peewee division and above, but not in Atom and below.
Vote : YES  or  NO

Two third period goals propelled the Powell River Kings to a 3-2 BCHL exhibition win over the Coquitlam Express before about 200 hockey fans Sunday afternoon in Gibsons.

Coquitlam opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest when Justin Georgsen fired a high shot from just inside the blue line that beat Kings’ goalie Billy McGladrey over the shoulder.

Powell River tied up the contest 13 minutes later as Brandon Tidy scored his first of two goals on the day and the teams skated off tied 1-1 after the first.

Coquitlam came out hard in the second and saw John Siemer snap a wicked wrist shot top shelf behind McGladrey at the 6:41 mark and Coquitlam led by one after two.

The Express got into penalty problems in the third and it cost them as Tidy tied the game at 2-2 at the five-minute mark and Brenden Forbes scored the game winner on the power play with seven minutes to go.

The final seven minutes produced lots of rough stuff with a bit of a parade to the penalty box.

“It was a better third period. The first was OK, but the start of the second was pretty bad for about the first eight or nine minutes,” said Kings’ associate head coach and assistant general manager Chad van Dieman. “But the guys really responded in the third. It’s good to see that our guys kept their composure, and the power play gave us the chance. We’re happy to come out with the win.”

With the win, the Kings finished the pre-season with a 4-0 record while the Express dropped to 1-2.

“I think in a 60-minute game we played pretty well for 50. In the third period we became undisciplined and took some penalties, which caused us some problems,” said Express head coach Jon Calvano. “For 45 to 50 minutes, I thought we played well. We’re playing physical. We were hard on the forecheck, our goaltender played quite well and made some good saves out there. But it’s exhibition and that’s what it’s about — there’s no two points. It’s a chance to test ourselves against some of the best teams in the league.”

The Express open the season at home Sept. 23 against Penticton while the Kings open at home the same night against Nanaimo.

The game was highlighted by a minor hockey mini game from the Tyke division and a performance from Sunshine Coast Figure Skating Club member Caitlin Jarvis.

At the start of the game after the singing of the national anthem, first responders from the Coast, including RCMP, paramedics and firefighters made their way onto the ice where a moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the victims of 9/11. Gibsons Fire Chief Bob Stevens performed the ceremonial puck drop between the two team captains

APRIL 1, 2011

The Novice Canadians from the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association struck gold last weekend in Powell River.

Starting the year with eight players who had never played hockey before, the team then went ahead and lost every game until mid-January, then miraculously came together, worked hard, became friends and ended their year in an incredible way.

The tournament featured teams from as far away as Vancouver Island.

The Canadians won their first three games seeding them first overall, setting them up against Powell River in the championship game. The final was an incredibly close game with the Canadians winning 4-3. All the players played better than they ever had, and four were honoured with special achievement awards from the tournament.

Other highlights included a 10-goal tournament performance from Oliver Dorey, defenceman Finn Brooks scoring a hat trick, Aman Smardon scoring eight goals and adding several assists, and goalie Liam Allen was stellar in net, making saves that Roberto Luongo would love.

After the final seconds ticked away in the last game and the Canadians had won, suddenly the rink surface resembled the gold medal hockey game after Sidney Crosby slid in that famous goal. There was hockey gear and sticks all over the ice while players hugged and jumped into a pile. The boys and girls on the team then shook hands and thanked their opponents, lined up along the blue line and received their medals

Langley takes top spot at Atom tournament

The Langley Nighthawks captured the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association’s 2011 Spring Fling Atom tournament title with a 4-1 win over the Surrey Avalanche last Sunday afternoon at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

Langley was the top team in pool one with a 3-1 round robin record while Surrey was the top team in pool two, also with a 3-1 record.

The third place finish went to the Cloverdale Vipers as they edged the Sunshine Coast Ducks 2-1 in the other playoff game on Sunday. The Ducks finished second in pool one with a record of 2-1-1, while Cloverdale finished second in pool two, also with a record of 2-1-1.

Rounding out the pool one standings were the Sunshine Coast Oilers, who finished a 2-2, followed by Powell River Rona with a 0-4 record. Rounding out pool two were Powell River Aero with a 2-2 record and the Sunshine Coast Sharks with a 1-3 record.

The tournament started with eight games last Friday including the Oilers over the Sharks 8-3, the Avalanche over the Ducks 3-2, the Oilers over Surrey 2-1, Ducks over the Sharks 8-4.

Saturday’s games included the Ducks and Vipers playing to a 1-1 tie, Langley over the Sharks 7-0, Aero edging the Oilers 5-4 and the Vipers edging the Oilers 2-1. Round robin play concluded Saturday morning with the Ducks beating Aero 4-3 and the Sharks beating Rona 5-3.

The weekend concluded back-to-back weekends of minor hockey tournament action for the association. Both tournaments were a huge success and tournament co-ordinator Carrie Caldwell extended thanks to all the volunteers, parents, coaches, spectators and, of course, the players for making the tournaments such a huge success

Legault wins Major Midget championship

Sechelt’s Scott Legault helped lead the Vancouver North West Giants to their third consecutive Major Midget League Championship with a two-game sweep of the Cariboo Cougars last weekend.

The Giants won game one 4-3 and followed that up with a 6-2 win in game two. Both games were played at the Burnaby Winter Club. Scott picked up the win on Friday and continued his fantastic season as he posted a record of 13-1-4 with a sparkling 2.28 GAA in regular season play.

The Giants will now wait to see who they will play from the Alberta Midget AAA League. The championship series in that league is currently underway with the Red Deer Optimist Rebels taking on the Leduc Chrysler Oil Kings.

The B.C. Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15 to 17-year-old an opportunity to play within their own age group. Playing at this high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.

WHL playoffs

Madeira Park’s Joe Antilla is heading into the 2011 Western Hockey League (WHL) playoffs on a high after his most successful junior season.

Antilla finished with a career high 40 points, including 21 goals and was a plus 33 in helping to lead the Kootenay Ice to a fourth place finish in the Eastern Conference standings. The Ice will host the Moose Jaw Warriors in game one of their best-of-seven quarter-final series, which gets underway this weekend.

Antilla, a 20-year-old left winger, is in his fourth season with the Ice. He has had season point totals of three, 28 and 25 in his previous three years and has one point in 10 career playoff games with the Ice.

Hockey Day celebrated on the Coast - HOCKEYVILLE

The Gibsons and Area Community Centre was home to Hockey Day on the Coast last Sunday, Jan. 16, and it was a day of great hockey filled with Sunshine Coast victories.

The day was in support of the Sunshine Coast Hockeyville 2011 bid. Hockeyville is a contest run by Kraft and CBC every year to find the community with the most hockey passion. The winning community wins $100,000 in arena upgrades and a NHL pre-season game the following season.

The day started out with the Peewee C2 team playing North Van C12. The Coast was down 2-0 when the tides turned after two Nick Stinchcombe goals, ensuring the game would end in a hard-fought tie.

After Robyn Jacques belted out a stunning version of O Canada, the Atom A Blues took to the ice against the Vancouver T-Birds.

Always a close game, the Blues were inspired to score some goals.

Evan Robinson took a great pass from Julian Miles and scored his first of the season, and Kai Gerler kept up the pace, scoring the goal off a pass from Andrew Hunt.

Later in the game, Kai continued to rack up the points by feeding a great shot to Julian Miles, who completed the pass for a goal. Tyler Stinchcombe saw his name on the score sheet twice as he assisted Austin Fournier’s goal and then weaved his way from deep in his team’s end for an unassisted goal. Geo Wilson was hot in goal, looking more like a back catcher with all the glove saves he made, as the Blues were full value in their 5-2 win.

Although Robyn was a hard act to follow, a group of Sunshine Coast hockey moms took to the microphone for their rendition of O Canada before the third game between the Peewee Blues and Vancouver.

Magnus Manson was stellar in net, and Cam McAllister worked hard for his hat trick, leading the Blues to a 6-2 victory.

To start off the fourth game of the day, Kathy Worsfold sang O Canada with heart and soul.

The Bantam Blues came out a little flat and were behind by one at the end of the first against Richmond, but the second and third periods were all Blues. Brennan Meyers led the scoring with a hat trick, while Ben Myrink scored two goals in the 8-3 win. Therin Hemstalk, Nolan Caldwell and Kyle Bergh added singles, while Tyler Graham picked up four assists.

With successful results coming from all four games, our own Don Cherry (Nick Stinchcombe) was kept busy doing post-game player interviews. That footage will by used to make a video submission for Hockeyville.

Other activities included a hockey trivia contest and the Kraft dinner challenge. Hockey moms made their best KD recipes and the kids tasted and voted for the best. Although the chocolate cake was absolutely delicious (it had KD blended into it), it was Christina Smethurst’s Tex Mex Bake that won the prize. The Food Bank was also a winner as a huge box of food was collected.

All in all, it was a great day of community support for Coast kids and the Hockeyville submission. What is needed now is for people to go to the website and submit their hockey stories. Two communities from each region will be chosen on March 8, forming the top 10. Following that round, there will be a period of public voting that will narrow the field to five communities.

Submissions can be made at www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hockeyville/home/en/index.shtml. You can also join the Facebook page and receive updates. For more details on Hockeyville, contact Brenda Rowe at 604-740-7834.

Bantam Blues win gold at spirit tournament

JANUARY 7th, 2011

Ian Jacques

The Bantam Rep Blues finished 2010 off in grand style, winning gold at the Vancouver Spirit Christmas holiday tournament.

Coming into the tournament on a roll after posting a stellar 7-2-1 record in regular season play, the Blues kept things rolling by dominating Saanich in the first game, winning 7-4.

Tyler Graham was named game MVP for his stellar defensive play and his four assists.

Game two was a tougher test as the Blues played a much higher seeded Vancouver Spirit team.

It was a back and forth affair that was still tied late in the third period, but the Blues poured it on in the final minutes, scoring three goals to post a 7-5 victory.

Therin Hemstalk was named game MVP on the strength of his hat trick.

In game three, the Blues squared off with Comox Valley in another tight contest that saw the Blues trailing with a minute to go. Needing a tie to advance to the playoffs, the Blues pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. The move worked as Gavin Strom scored to tie the game at 4-4 with 30 seconds to play. The tie ensured the Blues first place in their bracket and a trip to the semifinals.

Kyle Bergh was named game MVP with a goal and two assists.

The Blues took on a team from Everett, Wash. in the semifinal and dominated from the start, outshooting them badly through 40 minutes. But some stellar goaltending from the Everett keeper kept things close.

With the score tied at 4-4, the Blues won a key face-off in the Everett zone with less than a minute to play. Therin won the draw straight to Lakota Joe who blasted home the game winner. Lakota was named game MVP for a great all-round effort.

The final saw the Blues square off against Surrey.

Surrey, like all the other Blues’ opponents, were seeded much higher in regular season play, and it showed in the first period. Surrey dominated the Blues and only a stellar effort from Blues’ goalie Ethan Hutton kept the score close.

Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Blues got a lift after a goal from Therin and soon after tied the game at 2-2 after a great goal from Brennan Mayers.

The Blues took control of the game in the third period on goals by Robbie Casey, who tipped in a Lakota point shot, and a sublime effort from Brennan to finish off a pretty three-way passing play.

With the game seemingly in hand, the Blues got into penalty trouble and Surrey was able to tie up the score. With overtime looming, the Blues mounted one last push and a seemingly innocent shot by Luke Kalenuik found its way past the Surrey goalie.

After killing off the final frantic 30 seconds, the Blues celebrated their gold medal win. Game MVP went to Ethan in goal, and just as easily could have gone to Brennan, who was a force all game according to coach Ray Graham.

“This was truly a team victory as every line and defensive pairing had significant contributions,” Graham said. “Now it’s back to regular season play and hopefully a banner for the Blues.”

Food, Blanket & Coat Drive Update

SCMHA Atom and PeeWee Rep hockey players have been working hard collecting food, blankets and jackets for those less fortunate during this holiday season. The PeeWee team delivered coats and blankets to the First United Church last week to overwheliming thank you's. Trucks loaded with warm blankets and jackets drew a crowd outside the East Vancouver Church. The kids were a bit nervous as throngs of people approached. Nevan Flay, defence player for the PeeWee team wondered at the fact that someone could need a blanket so badly.

Players then delivered food, turkey bucks and cash donations to the Sunshine Coast Food Bank on Monday, Dec. 20th. $50 in turkey bucks and $100 in cash was donated along with bags and boxes of non-perishable food items. The items were collected over the past month from fans who donated items whenever the team scored a goal! Tyler Stinchcombe, Atom Captain, said "It makes us feel good that we can earn food for people when we score."
These hockey players recognize that it is a priviledge to play minor hockey and takes not only dedication from the parents, but community support as well. Rep hockey teams often ask the community for support so that they may reach their goals. This is one way for the kids to give back.

Tykes Update 12/20/2010

Sunday, Dec. 19th saw the Tykes Division (5-6 year olds) play a full-on, exciting hockey game with announcer! It was a fast-paced, intense, evenly matched game that had the Flames narrowly edge out the Canucks 4 to 3. The game was followed by the Tykes Christmas party - plenty of food and fun was had by all and it even included a visit by one of Santa's helpers who handed out candy canes and books from the book exchange. The children (and parents) had a blast and wish everyone a very happy holiday! Tykes will return to it's regular Friday and Sunday practice schedule in the New Year.

Midget Blues Update 12/13/2010:

This past weekend was a tough one for our Midget Blues. With a Saturday evening game in Whiterock that got the team off the ice at eight o clock. It was as though everyone was more concerned with getting home than they were in playing the game. The drive was a testy one, with all the roadwork, and bad weather conditions. When asked for a quote for the article coach Darren Kohuch said “well, we all made it to the ferry safely” with a chuckle “it’s best we try to forget about that performance.”

On Sunday our boys came to play, when we hosted Richmond at the Gibsons arena. Richmond scored 27 seconds into the game, making some of the crowd wonder what was up, but Jake Stanley answered 6 seconds later and it was game on. It was a very fast game played with excellent intensity by both teams. The first period ended in a tie at 3, with additional goals from Thomas Scarr and Reece Nelsen. At the break both teams must have reviewed checking duties as the second proved to be much tighter with the visitors managing one more tally. With six minutes remaining in the third, and the home team pouring it on, the visiting team potted one more, against the flow, to go up by two. Another late goal sealed the deal at 6-3.

“They had one kid that figured in 5 of their 6 goals” commented team manager Darragh Workman “He was the difference, our boys played an excellent game and easily could have been the winning team today, we stayed out of the box and carried the play, outshooting them 30-24. A win just wasn’t in the cards but the team can be proud of their effort”.

The Midget Blues host North Van this coming Sunday, Dec. 19th at 5:15pm in Gibsons. The boys will be looking for some redemption from an earlier meeting this season.

Midget Blues 12/05/2010:

It was a good week for the Sunshine Coast Midget Blues. They went 2-1 in three games over four days. Thursday evening they travelled to Planet Ice Coquitlam and took it to the hosts, winning handily 3 -1. Excellent goaltending by Cam McLean led the team. An unfortunate fall on a back check allowed a 2 man break on Cam, and with 6 seconds remaining they stole the shutout. “Only taking 8 minutes in penalties really helped us control the flow of play, and dictate our style” said one parent. Tyler Starnes, Cody August, and Thomas Scarr all got goals.

On Saturday they hosted Hollyburn in the old rink in Sechelt. It was a perfect build-up for the men’s senior ‘AA’ game to take place later that evening. Once again we won handily 5-1, with only 8 minutes in penalties. “Our speed and attention to details on the back-check, paid dividends” said team manager Darragh Workman “they never got a chance to get set up in our end.” Cam McLean was once again solid in net. Goals from Jordan Mazzon, Andy Marsh, Breaden Cross, Rob Dixon, and Timo Antilla, spread out the offence. Breaden, Timo, and Andy all had two points.

On Sunday they played their third in four days and it showed. With valiant effort, they battled to a 7-4 loss to those buggers from Mission. Breaking the recent trend and coming away with 18 minutes in the sin bin. “They have a solid team and you have to stay in front of them, if you try to check them from behind the play, they draw penalties and then make you pay” said Darragh. "Our back-check lacked the intensity, and some players lacked the same discipline we showed yesterday.” Tied at 2 after the first period, Mission pulled away with 4 unanswered 2ndperiod goals. A late gutsy effort from Braeden for a goal, and a point blast from Cody August weren’t enough in the third.  Thomas Scarr had a three point game.

The Sunshine Coast Midget Blues host home games on Sunday evenings at the Gibsons Arena at 5:15pm.

For Novice:

The standings for the Novice Division are:  Each team has played 2 games in November.

Team            Win    Lose     Tie

Oilers            1                    1
Canadians     1          1
Senators        1        1

Need something to do:  There's a novice game every Saturday night in the Gibsons Arena usually from 5:45 - 7:00.  Come cheer on the players.  It's free to get in to the rink - let's get some spectators out to watch!

For Bantam:

Bantam Hockey Windfall
Our local Rep A1 Bantam Hockey team was the lucky winner of a $2,000 cash prize. The Wilson Creek IGA and Team 1040 Radio whose mandate is to help sports teams around the province sponsored the contest. The players packed groceries at the Wilson Creek IGA as a method of fundraising. While doing so one astute parent, Mr. Kevin Palmer discovered the contest and entered it on behalf of the team. When asked what they would do with the money; Karin Bergh, team manager stated, “We’re still trying to decide, maybe we’ll use it for a tournament.”

For Atom:

Friday night (Nov 12th), Ducks played Oilers with a 7 - 3 win for the Ducks.  Fierce game played by all, both goalies played a 110% game!
Sunday night (Nov 14th), Sharks and Ducks played.  Sharks were up by 2 in the first.  Ducks came back strong and scored 2 in the second.  Sharks met the challenge and scored 2 more, making the final 4-2 for the Sharks.  Game was fast paced and both teams played excellent.

General News:

We had our Vancouver Giants Fundraiser Night on Sunday, Nov. 7th. A great time was had by all who attended to watch the Vancouver Giants win 3-0 over the Everett Silvertips! And over $3500.00 was raised to support local hockey athletes and the association thanks to the many parent volunteers who sold game and 50:50 tickets!

The Sunshine Coast Tykes provided the Timbits entertainment part of the game. Six year old Sechelt resident Austin Pratt was selected as the 7th man - he warmed up with the Giants and stood with them during the singing of the national anthems. The 1st intermission game was very intense and that ended in a 1-1 tie! Five year-old Gibsons resident Oliver Tulk (white #8) scored the first goal on an incredible break away that had the whole Coliseum on their feet cheering! Then Desmond Anderson of Gibson scored for the red team to tie up the game. All the kids were truly excited to play in such a big venue and did a great job! Video of the Timbits game is available on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0gPc0bYGVo

Timo Antilla and Josh Gray-Pearl will also be attending main camp for the Osoyoos Coyotes of the KIJHL. Both Josh and Timo expect to play for this new team in the KIJHL.

Robert Dixon was invited to the Quesnel Millionaires of the BCHL, prospect camp, and will be attending their main camp.

Geoff Webb will be attending the BCHL Langley Chiefs main camp, and the KIJHL Kamloops Storm, and Princeton Posse camps. Geoff hopes to catch on with the Princeton Posse.

Ryley Dempster will be going to the KIJHLs Grand Forks Border Bruins main camp.

Best of luck to all these players, in their tryouts.

Kyle Horsman made the U-17 BC cup, a tournament run byBC Hockey where they identify the 20 best players at 5 zone camps, and play a tournament held this year in 100 Mile House.  Kyle was invited and tried out for the U-17 Team BC tryouts, in Salmon Arm.  We were told he looked quite good at both camps.  Kyle will be going to the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds main camp in late August.  This upcoming season, Kyle will be playing for the OHA Prep team, out of Penticton, BC.

Scott Legault, went to the Campbell River Storm prospect camp and also their main camp, where he looked good.  Scott will be going to the WHL Vancouver Giants camp in late August.  Scott tried out for and made the Vancouver NW Giants, of the BC Major Midget League. In the short history of this league, Scott is the only player that played all his hockey for SCMHA to make the NW Giants.

It was another successful off season for Sunshine Coast players.  Best of luck to all this upcoming season.

For those second year bantam players, remember to check BC Hockeys website after October 15th, for the application to attend the zone tryouts for the BC Cup team.  You never know!!

Congratulations to some local hockey players

This summer has been a great year for some of our bantam and midget players.  Two graduating players, Marc Chabot and Brady Bjornson have both been invited back to the Powell River Kings main camp, and will be playing Junior hockey this upcoming year.  Connor Cross attended two Junior A camps, making the Young Guns all star game at the Burnaby Express prospect camp, and will be attending the Powell River Kings main camp.

Kyle Horsman was drafted by the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL, and will be attending his first Thunderbirds camp in August, Kyle also made the young guns all star team at the Express prospect camp, was invited back to the Cowichan Capitals camp, and also attended the Victoria Grizzlies prospect camp.

Goalie, Scott Legault was one of 68 players from across BC, invited to try out for the inaugural U-16 Team BC tryouts in Penticton, July 1st to 4th, this was a result of his good showing at the BC Cup tournament in Salmon Arm.  He also made the young guns all star team at the Express camp, and tried out for the Cowichan Capitals.  He will be attending two WHL tryout camps, the Vancouver Giants rookie camp, August 20, and 21st, and the Spokane Chiefs main camp in Spokane, starting August 26th.

Josh Macey went to three Junior A prospect camps; Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Powell River Kings, and the Burnaby Express.  Ryley Dempster and Geoff Webb also tried out for the Burnaby Express and the Powell River Kings, as well as some Junior B teams.

Overall it was a great summer for a number of local hockey prospects, and hopefully the BCHL exhibition game in September will have some local kids playing in it.
