From the President
Message from the President!
I trust that everyone had a great Christmas season.
I would like to report that the hockey season is going well. The Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association Executive recognizes the hours of volunteering it takes to coach and organize a team and we thank all the volunteers who have worked so hard up to this point.
As you might expect, our association faces financial challenges not unlike any other volunteer run sports groups. I would like to thank all parents for their help with the fundraising efforts that have been ongoing.
Because of that we are able to continue the season without cutting back. Also a huge thank you to our sponsors this year who have also made a huge contribution towards our funding.
The Bantam Rep team will now be showing up in new uniforms bringing the total number of teams outfitted to 4. We continue to work on this.
Now, as far as the teams are concerned, each division is doing well.
We are happy to see the Tykes and Novice age groups are growing and the kids are enjoying themselves. Thanks also goes out to all the individuals who have stepped up to coach.
The Atom C group has 4 evenly matched and competitive teams that compete each week. From what I have seen and heard all of their games are generally nail-biters to the end which is a testament to the terrific coaches we have. All 4 of them will be competing in our own tournament over the spring break. Stay tuned for that.
The Atom A team has been playing exceptionally well throughout their regular season, finishing up the first half of the season at the top of their Flight. As well, they just finished winning Gold at a Christmas tournament in Victoria.
Both PeeWee C teams, body-checking and non body-checking are near the top of the standings in their respective divisions. From what I understand they are both having a great season. Both teams will be competing at the PeeWee C tournament in February, along with 9 visiting teams!
The Peewee A team is also having a successful season up to this point. They were also moved up a Flight based on their strong play. As a side note they will be representing BC, Canada and the Sunshine Coast in Phoenix, Az in February. If you would like to follow their Phoenix adventure you can “Follow” their blog at www.bluesinphoenix.wordpress.com
The Bantam C team has been working hard and doing well in a tough division. They are a great group of kids. They had a great time at their tournament in Powell River in November.
The Bantam A team is in the upper echelon of their division. They are a talented group who skate like the wind.
After a slow start, the Midget C team has come together, fielded a team and has been very competitive.
Finally, the Midget A team is also doing very well. They play hard and are a well-coached bunch. You may see some action around their game time in Gibsons these days. Coast Cable has started to film their games! I am not sure when they are broadcast but check your local listings!
In conclusion, I encourage you to support your kids, their coaches and all those others who give back to our minor hockey association. Give them a big thanks and an encouraging word frequently.
Sean Gray
President.
